Ghazal- Discovering the Basics of Urdu Poetry

Urdu language is also known as “Lashkari Language” which means “A Mixture of Many languages”. Though there are various forms of poetry in Urdu, one of them is “Ghazal” which is mainly popular in South Asian countries.

The word ghazal has its roots in North Africa and Middle East and is a modified version of the Arabian Qasida which is used to describe one’s personality. There are certain rules for the composition of ghazal and poets strictly follow the rules so that their composition is labeled as a Ghazal.

Ghazal is mostly written and read by the people who have a liking towards intense feelings because ghazal explains the real pain and grieves of the writer. Most of the time, the poet describes the personality of his/her loved one in the form of couplets. Due to the influence of this pain, the writer can share his/her utmost feelings and the expressions are shown with great extremities. Ghazal writers follow the convention of writing their pen name, popularly known as “Takhalus” in the last couplet of the ghazal.

Where Did It Come From?

With the influence of Muslim rule in South Asia, the power centers were changing as the Islamic Sultanates were spreading wide under the reign of Ottoman Caliphate. Resultantly, the ghazal spread into South Asia in the 12th century. Although the ghazal is most prominently a form of Urdu poetry, it is now found in the poetry of many languages on the Indian Subcontinent too.

Some Famous Names of Ghazal Writing

Some of the most famous Ghazal writers were Rumi and Hafiz who wrote their composition in Persian language. Poet Fuzûlî wrote ghazals in Azeri language which is spoken in Azerbaijan. Allama Muhammad Iqbal and Mirza Ghalib wrote in Urdu language while Kazi Nazrul Islam of Bengal composed ghazal in Bengali language. Ghazal was not only confined to South Asia only but also Johann Wolfgang von Goethe from Germany, played his role in making ghazal popular in the European region too.
